The town’s vernacular architecture—coral walls spanned by mangrove poles, inner courtyards and arched openings—and its narrow winding streets conducive to pedestrian traffic and donkeys (not cars) have won the hearts of visitors to the island. In the heart of Lamu Old Town, just a stone throw from the Indian Ocean, an old Swahili house of late 1700 has been transformed into a cosy family hotel.
Life is lived at a leisurely pace, and its physical appearance and character have changed very little in centuries. Lots of narrow alleyways, interesting museums and lots of donkeys. Lamu town is a great place to explore, but ideally with a guide. Lamu Town is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili town on the East African coast and it dates back to the 16 th century.
The town of Lamu began life as a 14th century Swahili settlement, but the island has seen many visitors and influences, including Portuguese explorers, Turkish traders and the Omani Arabs.
Helpful. For the traveler, Lamu is a hypnotically exotic experience, made even more enjoyable by the relaxed and welcoming attitudes of the locals.To visit Lamu is to enter another world, and the visitors finds themselves becoming a part of this world/ society.
The region’s airstrip is located in Manda Airstrip, a short boat ride from Lamu Island.
