Our first project in our 2019 Ford Transit was installing a swivel seat to the passenger seat. We knew we wanted to do this hike prior to going so we planned a whole day to do it. From the restaurants around the main square starting walking up towards the castle and church (you’ll see it up the hill and can’t miss it). Hike along the rim of a caldera, explore the towns of Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, and Fira, and enjoy some of the most beautiful views of the islands.
From there it depends on where you want to go and what you want to do in Oia.Before leaving for the hike we threw clean clothes and our After dinner in Oia we easily caught the bus back to Fira. Yes, Pyrgos is a great village to explore on foot. You can find them at the old port.The old port looks rather quiet but it is actually very busy. It’s common to splurge a little more than usual and do things differently than you would in your every day routine. There are a decent amount of stairs to walk down to get out to the rock itself. As a result, it has more congestion and is a little more commercial than Oia. We had seen all the archaeological sites on that visit, so today we would just walk around Fira and relax. However, the place has become a mecca for cruise ships which crowd the narrow streets. You will have plenty of chances to head into town if you want to catch a bus or taxi or stop for a quick snack. The bus was crowded on the way to Fira so we ended up standing in the middle aisle for most of the ride.Keep in mind we took a lot of breaks to stop and take pictures along the way.
We arrived in Santorini at 7am. Maybe 'Super Garish' would be a more accurate description!We have a look around the shops then head to the other side of town to The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral.Brendan does not wish to be orange so I return camera settings to normal.A volcanic landscape behind the yacht 'Sea Cloud'.......The Sea Cloud is a sailing cruise ship. The old port of Santorini originally could only be reached by the long winding set of steps down from Fira. Being the capital of Santorini, it provides a vast variety of sightseeing and "things to do". It is one of the top places to visit in South America and we absolutely loved our time there! Our shoes and legs did get quite dirty by the end of the day so we appreciated wearing sneakers and athletic clothing. There are enough to generally guide you but don’t expect consistent directions.
This time we caught the cable car which gives good views out along the caldera. Moreover, a lot of boats depart daily for tours to the volcano, Nea and Palea kameni, Thirasia and Oia for the sunset. Went to Santorini because we had heard how beautiful it is, and there is no denying the view from the caldera is special. Fira is the main port of Santorini, as such, it is where all of the cruise ships stop in Santorini. The conditions of the hike change significantly from start to finish so it’s important to be comfortable walking up and down a fair amount of stairs. Additionally, for the more ambitious, there is a footpath from Fira through Imerovigli to Oia that will take you all along the clifftops around the caldera and through the 3 primary towns of Santorini. All of which were extremely helpful.
