The women's auxiliary was organized in 1883, first in relation to the GAR.
The SUVCW was organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, as the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. Members of the Sons of Veterans wore military-style uniforms and practiced tactics and drill.
We seek to educate and keep alive the memories of our ancestors – the “Boys in Blue”.Our patriotic service is focused on veterans primarily through our “Sisters Supporting Women Veterans” project.We are available to speak and teach when requested. At the National Encampment at Boston, Massachusetts in 1894, the name was changed to the Sons of Union Veterans Auxiliary, with it eventually becoming known as the Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.Our members work alongside the SUVCW during special events, ceremonies, and presentations.Sister Anthony O’Connell Auxiliary No. Membership in the SV grew rapidly, and membership at the 1890 national encampment was reported at 145,000 which can be compared to the membership of the GAR in the same year of about 400,000. In addition to the ASUVCW there are three other organizations which, with the SUVCW and ASUVCW, comprise the "Allied Orders".
On October 18, 1882, the first National Encampment was held in Pittsburgh. As the SVR was not a state militia organization, it was not integrated into the Membership in the SV peaked in 1904, when it was reported at more than 200,000.
Those purposes broadly include: providing information and enlightenment of the Armed Conflict of 1861-1865, supporting project and charities attributable to Civil War history, monument preservation/restoration, monument construction and erection with members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.The Foundation was incorporated in the State of Ohio and maintains headquarters at Milford, Ohio.
