A highly compressed development schedule dictated a modular design … The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), nicknamed Curiosity, is a large rover with the objective of exploring the martian environment as a former or current habitat for life. It was taken Nov. 2, 2014, at a target called "Whale Rock" within the "Pahrump Hills" outcrop at the base of Mount Sharp. The rover is 10 feet (3 meters) long, 9 feet (2.7 meters) wide, 7 feet (2.2 meters) high, and has a mass of 1,982 pounds (899 kilograms). Evidence of ancient streams, deltas and lakes that Curiosity detected a ten-fold increase in methane levels local to the Gale Crater site.
